Day one: Defeat for GB women in opener with Brazil
Group A: Brazil 3-0 Great Britain
Great Britain's women were defeated 3-0 by Brazil in their opening match in Group A on the first day of the 2026 FIP World Cup Finals in Doha.
GB's hopes of causing an upset against the six-time bronze medallists were dealt a blow before play began when world no.93 Catherine Rose pulled out of the opening tie due to illness.
GB no.1 Aimee Gibson was instead partnered by Tia Norton, for whom it was a first competitive outing since her wildcard appearance at the London Premier Padel P1 in early August due to an Achilles injury.
However, there was little hint of rustiness early on as Britain's top pair traded blows with Cristina Cirne world No.208 and world No.157 Julia Giustu Gomes to reach 3-3.
Gibson and Norton came within a whisker of breaking in the seventh set, but Brazil won a crucial star point and then went on to break in the following game before taking the opening set 6-3.
The match looked set for an early finish with the Brits 5-1 and 30-0 down on their own serve in the second set, but a strong late flurry saw Norton and Gibson reduce arrears to 5-4. After bravely saving a string of match points, the contest finally ended 6-3 6-4, to Brazil's evident relief.
The second tie saw Lisa Phillips and Abigail Tordoff take on world No.75 Raquel Piltcher and world No.318 Alessandra Abbud de Barros.
The first set hinged on a break of serve in the second game by the experienced Brazilian pairing which they consolidated to see it out 6-3. The second saw them really gain momentum as they wrapped up the team's victory with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph.
Chloe de la Mare and Victoria Nicholas then resumed their fruitful partnership from September's European qualifying event in Madrid, up against Brazil's third pair Fernanda Abarzua Branchi and Helena Rousselet Novillo.
There were two breaks of serve apiece in the opening set which went to a closely contested tiebreak which the Brazilians snatched 8-6.
But Nicholas and 16-year-old De la Mare were brilliant in the second set which they took 6-3. The young Guernseywoman was unflappable as Brazil repeatedly froze out Nicholas and targeted her in the vast majority of rallies.
Although the Brits broke in the first game of the deciding set, fortunes were quickly reversed as Brazil won the next four games. At 5-3 down, Nicholas and De la Mare saved a match ball, then got the match back on serve by breaking in the next game.
In a lengthy tenth game, the Brits bravely saved second, third and fourth match points, but five was to prove too much as Brazil eventually sealed the opening day's last match 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 42 minutes.
Tuesday's second match in Group A (starting at 11.00 GMT) sees GB take on the might of nine-time champions Spain, who have won the last six consecutive titles. They then face Germany on Wednesday.
