Day five: GB's women qualify for Finals as men narrowly miss out to Germany

Great Britain's women secured their place at November's FIP World Cup in Doha after a dominant campaign at the European qualifier in Madrid.

Entering the event as top seeds, GB completed a sensational week with a 2-0 victory over Poland to grab one of the two qualifying spots alongside Germany, who beat Denmark 2-1 in the other semi-final.

However, the British men's team lost 2-1 to Germany in a dramatic semi-final lasting almost six and a half hours, in which all three matches went to three sets. They missed out on a place in this year's World Cup in Doha.

GB women celebrate World Cup passage

Aimee Gibson and Catherine Rose ended a week of serene dominance with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Julia Pacocha and Magdalena Kiszczynska in Saturday morning's decisive tie with Poland. The scoreline meant GB's No.1 pair conceded just three games all week.

The British victory was sealed by Chloe de la Mare and Victoria Nicholas — but they had to dig very deep against Aleksandra Rosolska and Zofia Piorkowska for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 triumph.

After the first two sets were shared, the British pair broke the Poles' serve at the most crucial juncture in the 10th game, sealing by a ripping backhand crosscourt winner by 16-year-old debutante de la Mare.

The victory seals GB women's first appearance at a World Championship since 2021 and the first time they have appeared without the men's team.

GB men miss out

There was an early setback for the men in their concluding clash with Germany when Sam Jones and Chris Salisbury went down 6-4, 6-7, 3-6 to Johannes Lindmeyer and Benjamin Fitzon.

Jones and Salisbury were serving for the match at 6-5 in the second set but let the opportunity slip and lost the ensuing tie-break 7-4. A break in the fifth game of the deciding set proved decisive for the German pair.

Up next were LTA Padel National champions Louie Harris and Alex Loughlan facing Agustin Reca and Matthias Wunner (world No.163 and 619 respectively). It proved to be a titanic battle.

After conceding the first set, GB's Welsh, Scottish combo ground out a gutsy 9-7 win in a second-set tie-break. Almost inevitably, a tense deciding set also went to a tiebreak. The Brits clinched it 7-4 to wrap up an exhilarating 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4) victory.

That set up a nail-biting decider for GB No.1 Christian Medina Murphy and Alfonso Patacho against Christian Bohnke and Nick Merten.

After taking the first set, the British pair went an early break down in the second but broke back in the eighth. However, the tie-break didn't go their way, and they were then broken in the fifth game of the deciding set, going down 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.
